By David Beresford

The Tasmanian Southern Rocklobster Fishery has been under review since late 2009 by the Wild Fisheries Management Branch of DPIPWE in order to address stock decline and to replace the current rules which expire this year.

The review is in its final consultation phase and was released for public comment on the 6th of April, a summary of the proposed changes for Commercial Fishers are as follows.

Due to the portential of significant caryover undermining the effects of TACC reductions and stock rebuilding all carryover provisions are to be removed.

There will be an introduction of anual cap of 30 Southern Rocklobsters per year.

The by-catch of Giant Crab will be reduced from 100 kilos to 50 kilos per annum.

In order to increase the biomass of large Southern Rocklobsters a maximum size limit of 160mm carapace length for both male and female Southern Rocklobsters for areas South of Eddystone Point through to Whale Head will be introduced for both Commercial and Recreational Fishers.
